Did you know that researchers estimate the average American consumes 10-12 pounds of chocolate each year? And that’s nothing compared to the people of Switzerland, who annually devour more than 20!
Based on these numbers, it’s probably safe to assume that everyone has enjoyed one or more of the many delectable flavors from chocolatiering giant, Godiva, at some point in their lives. Godiva Chocolate is already known for their luxurious chocolates, but their story goes deeper than that. These interesting facts about Godiva will have you enjoying each bite just a little bit more the next time you sink your teeth into one of their savory sweets!
It all started with a praline.
The origins of Godiva Chocolate trace back to Pierre Draps Sr. of Brussels Belgium. In 1926, Draps began making pralines at his sweets shop, a sugary mixture of finely ground almonds or hazelnuts, caramelized sugar, and cream. Pralines were first combined with chocolate in Belgium, creating one of the first famous Belgian chocolates.
Draps’ entire family became involved in his chocolatiering endeavors, eventually carrying on the legacy after his death.
Pierre Senior’s wife actually helped create the signature ornate package style the company is still known for. His son, Pierre Draps Jr. perfected several classic recipes, including one for the iconic dark chocolate truffle—solidifying Godiva’s emblematic presence in the chocolate industry.
Godiva Chocolate is named after the legendary Lady Godiva.
If you’re familiar with the story of Lady Godiva, this might be a little confusing. Lady Godiva was an English noblewoman who, according to legend, rode naked through the streets of Coventry on horseback, covered by her long hair. She rode in protest of her husband’s oppressive taxation on the people of Coventry.
The Draps family was inspired by Lady Godiva’s courage, passion, and evocativeness.
They thought, who better to symbolize the dedication it takes to create their luscious, authentic, and enticing boxes of chocolate than she? The image of Lady Godiva riding her horse is still the emblem of Godiva Chocolate today.
Five master chocolatiers develop 30-40 new recipes for Godiva every year.
Godiva’s five “Chef Chocolatiers” are stationed strategically in pivotal markets worldwide. This allows them to bring new ingredients, ideas, trends, and methods to the table when they convene to forge their creations. Along with these modern techniques, Godiva still uses a few of Draps’ original iconic recipes (including his chocolate praline).
It takes Godiva’s chef chocolatiers about a full year to completely develop a new recipe from concept to market.
After the initial recipe is concocted, it must go through a period of testing, refinement, and a final tasting, before being ready for production. The Godiva Chocolate factory in Brussels produces about 290 million chocolates per year, a process overseen by the five chocolatiers.
Today, Godiva has over 600 boutique stores all over the world and an international presence in over 100 countries.
Godiva Chocolate may have expanded their brand over the last near century, but they have not sacrificed the delicacy, quality, or magic of their products. Their dedication to creating unique, tantalizing flavors using the most innovative techniques perpetuates their reign as a legend in the chocolate industry.
